The Complete Silky Saw Buyers Guide

Yes. Silky saws are made to endure tough, dry, and wet conditions. They won’t rust or dull easily, even with regular use, and some (such as the outback edition) are even designed to cut through bone for hunters.

Silky saws are trusted by adventurers, outdoors enthusiasts, and professionals around the world because they’re compact, sharp, and built to last. Whether you’re clearing a campsite, prepping firewood, or navigating dense bush, a Silky gives you speed, reliability, and precision without the bulk of a chainsaw. They fold up neatly, are easy to carry, and handle tough Australian conditions with ease. Simply put: a Silky makes your adventures smoother, safer, and more efficient.

      What About the Katana?
4x4 + Overlanding, if you want to collect 250mm logs or bigger, and clear fallen trees that are blocking your path. These are literally called the Man Powered Chainsaw for a reason. We have one in our Landrover for our Adventures and honestly we use it on every trip.

Absolutely. Even if it’s your first time, the ergonomic design and smooth cutting action make it easy to tackle wood quickly and safely.
Just Remember Silky Saws only cut on the Pull stroke ()when you are pulling it toward yourself)

Absolutely! They fold neatly, fit in your backpack or vehicle, and come with a protective case perfect for overlanding, camping, or bushwalking. Some will fit in your glove boxes, center consoles, and even your pockets.

Silky saws use a pull-stroke design, they cut when you pull the blade toward you. This keeps the blade straight, under tension, and biting deep with every stroke. The result? Faster, cleaner cuts with less effort, even on hardwood.

Each blade is razor-sharp, impulse-hardened, and designed to glide through wood like a hot knife through butter, whether you’re clearing a track, prepping firewood, or handling an emergency in the bush, these saws will perform

Trusted by outdoor pros, overlanders, and adventurers worldwide, a Silky turns a tough job into a quick one, so you can get back to enjoying your adventure.

      Japanese SK4 High-Carbon Steel
      - Harder than most Western saw steels, which means it holds an edge longer.
      - Less flex = cleaner, straighter cuts.

      Impulse-Hardened Teeth
-The cutting teeth are heat-treated individually, making them harder (around Rockwell 68–71).
      - They stay razor sharp 3–4 times longer than non-hardened teeth.

      Angle Tooth Design.

      - Silky’s teeth cut on the pull stroke with 4 cutting angles.
      - Instead of tearing fibres like cheap saws, they slice cleanly through wood almost like a knife.

      Mirror-Polished Blades
      - Reduces friction and sap build-up, so every stroke bites harder.
      - That’s why Silkys feel like they’re “gliding” compared to other saws.

      1) Overhanging Branches & Track Scratchers

      • Silky quickly trims back branches scraping your mirrors, paint, or
        canopy.
      • No need to fire up a chainsaw just to clear medium sized branches.
and depending on the saw you dont even need a chainsaw for huge branch or a whole tree.

      2) Small Logs & Fallen Branches Across the Track

      • Most obstacles are <20cm thick perfect size for a Silky to slice through in seconds.

      3) Recovery Situations

      • Logs wedged under diffs, sliders, or suspension arms — too tight for a
        chainsaw bar.
      • Silky slips in and clears the obstruction safely.

      4) Noise & Safety Complaints

      • Chainsaws are loud, dangerous, and need PPE.
      • A Silky keeps the bush peaceful and is safe enough for anyone in the crew
        to use.

      5) Compact & Always Ready

      • Lives in your glovebox or recovery kit.
      • No fuel, oil, spark plugs, or starting issues. Just unfold and cut.

      6) The famous Sharp tree root (tyre destroyer - panel drag damage)
When you need to cut a tree root to a entrance, its covered in mud, or so close to ground your chainsaw chain will get damaged.

Silky makes a range of outdoor cutting tools, and the handsaws in the range are pruning saws designed for camping, bushcraft, and 4WD use.

Unlike machetes, Silky handsaws are not considered dangerous or restricted items in Australia, so they are safe and legal to carry and use. (just be mindful of your individual State laws and stay up to date with them as this is an ever evolving space)

Pro Tip: Always store the saw folded or in its sheath, keep it away from children, and follow basic safety practices while cutting.

Silky Saw Care | Maintenance FAQS

      1. Quick Wipe Down
After you’re done, just brush or wipe off any sawdust or sap. No fancy cleaning
      routine needed.

      2. Keep It Dry
If the blade gets wet, dry it before folding or sheathing.

      3. Light Oil (Now and Then)
Every so often, give the blade a quick spray with a household oil (WD-40 or
CRC). That’s it, nothing constant. Lanolin will work great and is widely available

      4. Swap the Blade When Needed
Silky blades are super tough, but when the teeth finally dull, just pop on a
      new blade. No sharpening required.

Silky blades are made from premium Japanese steel and are impulse-hardened. This gives them exceptional sharpness and durability, but it also means they can’t be resharpened the traditional way. Once a blade becomes dull, it’s best to replace it with a genuine Silky replacement blade.

2)Why can’t I sharpen the blade myself? The teeth are hardened to a much higher level than a normal file can handle. Trying to sharpen them will only damage the blade and reduce cutting performance

      3) What’s the best option when the blade eventually dulls?
Simply swap in a replacement Silky blade. They’re easy to install, cost-effective, and keep your saw performing like new without any fussing around with files or sharpening kits

Wearing glove is advised for carrying out this small but sharp job.

      1) Undo the nut and bolt (with spring washer) located at the hinge section of the handle / blade.

      2) Remove old blade

      3) Insert new blade

      4) Insert nut bolt and spring washer (leave slightly loose)

      5) Move blade to different angles and make sure it latches correctly

      6) Tighten nut and bolt to desired opening tension.

      7) Go cut a tree a down or annoy your fellow chainsaw enthusiast

Impulse hardening is a special process Silky uses to make the saw teeth last longer. The very tips of the teeth are heated with a high-frequency current for just a split second. This makes them extremely hard (up to 3× harder than regular steel) while keeping the rest of the blade flexible.

👉 The result: a blade that cuts faster, stays sharper for much longer, and doesn’t need sharpening, just replace the blade when it eventually wears out.
